Spread the Word to End the Word PDF Print E-mail

It is time we Spread the Word to End the Word™ and build awareness for society to stop and think about its’ use of the R-word. That R-word is something hurtful and painful – “retard” or “retarded.” Most people don’t think of this word as hate speech, but that’s exactly what it feels like to millions of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, their families and friends. This word is just as cruel and offensive as any other slur.

For the 2nd year in a row Special Olympics is heading this important campaign and we plan to participate!  We have a date, 03.03.10, we have a co-sponsor (and are hoping to add more) with Epsilon Delta, and we have a DSN Board approved budget.  Now we are seeking people who are interested in planning our loal campaign.  We will meet at DSC next week (1/26/10 at 6:30pm) and will do a lot of communication via email.  We hope to print and distribute fliers, stickers, buttons and order t-shirts and more.

Are you interested in getting involved?  If so, please contact Jen Schrad by Friday, January 22nd.  Let me know if you can make the meeting and if you cannot, what ideas you have for our campaign.

This meeting is open to the community, so please send it to anyone that you think would like to be involved.

Please visit this link for more information.

Sincerely,
---Jennifer Schrad

Welcome New Parents!

Welcome to expectant parents, new parents, families new to the community, and families in the neighborhood who would like more information. We are here to assist you in any way we can. By offering opportunities to network with other parents, attending conferences, having social get-togethers and holiday parties, we hope you find a venue that is comfortable for you. We have monthly newsletters as well as meetings to keep you informed of the upcoming events and latest information regarding Down syndrome.

To add your name to our mailing list or talk with me directly, please send us your email address with your home address and phone number included. If you are an expectant parent or new parent, we have a complimentary information packet as well as a copy of the book Babies with Down Syndrome for you. Please feel free to call or email me. We look forward to getting to know you.

Sincerely,
Melissa Hoerner
